Making the choice to move to an assisted living community is not always easy. Once you move in and get settled, you will find that there are many opportunities for seniors to spend time with other members of their community. These are just a few of the activities that seniors in assisted living communities participate in daily.

1. Cooking

While most assisted living communities have a kitchen in each resident’s home, many also have community kitchens where residents can meet and cook meals together. Some residents host cooking clubs and others get together in the dining area at a specific time so they can share a meal together.

2. Crafting

Many assisted living communities will offer several different crafting times throughout the month. Once a week or a few times a week, residents will gather in a common area and work on the craft of the day. Gathering together to make a fun art project is a great way for seniors to socialize and get to know each other.

3. Exercise

Some type of exercise class is offered nearly daily at most assisted living communities. Classes targeting stretching and balance are popular choices. If there is no class taking place, most assisted living communities have a gym or common area where seniors can meet and stretch, walk, or do any other type of exercise together.

4. Music

Sometimes, a live performer will be brought into the assisted living community. Residents are invited and encouraged to attend the musical performance. Sometimes, residents are invited to gather together and sing songs. Singing together is particularly popular during the holidays or during birthday celebrations.

5. Volunteering

There are many club opportunities at an assisted living community, and many of these clubs focus on giving back. Residents will meet in knitting, sewing, or baking groups and make crafts that will be sent out to different groups throughout the community. Fire stations, maternity wards, and homeless shelters are just some of the many places that benefit from the kindness found in the hearts of seniors.
