When Should You Start Looking at Assisted Living?

It’s not always easy to know when it’s the right time to start looking at assisted living communities for your senior Mom. The best option is to have a plan in place before something happens so you and your family are not scrambling to find a solution.

Assisted living is assisted care for seniors who are independent but may need a little extra help with daily tasks of living, such as cleaning, cooking, mobility, medication management, and other health care needs. Assisted living communities provide housekeeping, meal services, transportation, and some health care services to residents.

How do you know when to start looking into assisted living options? Below are some indicators that it might be time:

  • your loved one is becoming more forgetful
  • you are concerned about your loved one’s driving
  • you worry when your loved one is at home alone
  • you worry if your loved one is taking their medications properly
  • you worry if they are eating well

If you are experiencing any of the above worries and concerns, it may be time to start looking at assisted living communities. But even if your senior mom does not appear to be having trouble living independently, gathering advice and information on assisted living communities in convenient locations is still a good idea. Each assisted living community is different. Call local assisted living communities and ask about getting a tour. Go inside and ask questions. Talk to your senior mom about what she wants in an assisted living community.
